Collagen: A kitchen staple

Collagen is one of the many staple items in my pantry and an important nutritional supplement for pregnant mamas. In general, I usually recommend consuming whole foods before supplements, however, I am also an advocate for "what works". Therefore, if it is a matter of supplementing vs. being nutritionally deficient, I suggest using supplements. A wonderful whole food source of collagen is bone broth made from free-range animal bones/hooves.

Collagen is a form of protein that is made up of amino acids. These amino acids easily absorb into the bloodstream and promote the formation of connective tissue for healthy skin, nails, joints, etc. Collagen is also considered a prebiotic that helps to fuel the beneficial bacteria in your gut.

Below are some of the many benefits of consuming collagen:
-Healthy hair, skin & nails
-Healing to your gut/can improve digestion
-Keeps joints healthy and lubricated
- Supports skin elasticity (for that growing belly)
- Additional protein source

One easy way to incorporate collagen into your diet is include 1-2 tablespoons in a smoothie. For those who want to experiment with making homemade gelatin gummies, I recommend using Pure Protein by Great Lakes (unflavored). Below is a simple recipe that only takes about 5 mins to prepare.

Collagen Gummy Recipe

Ingredients:
1 cup of 100% juice (cranberry or tart cherry works best)
2 Tablespoons unflavored gelatin
1 Tablespoon organic honey

Directions:

1.)  In a small saucepan, add juice and sprinkle gelatin on top.
2.)  Heat the juice/gelatin mixture on Med-low.
3.)  Gently whisk until all gelatin is absorbed (2-3 minutes).
4.) Once the gelatin is combined (no more grittiness) remove from heat and mix in honey.
5.) Pour mixture into a glass dish or glass tuber wear, cover, and cool in the refrigerator for a minimum of 2 hours.
6.) Enjoy homemade gummy treats for 2-3 days!
